Classical issues concerning the combustion engine, such as the implementation of innovative engine design or the research and development of new, more efficient and cleaner combustion processes are investigated. Furthermore topics, which more and more are gaining importance, are considered, like the virtual engine development, the research for hybrid propulsion taking into account the whole power train, or the in significance rising electronics for engines and vehicles. These subjects are combined with the advancement of “intelligent methodologies” in the testing and engine application phase via for example the Design of Experiments (DoE) approach.
Key activities make up amongst others:
- Flow analysis and mixture preparation with experimental and numerical methods. The experiments include among others special optical measurement techniques.
- Optimization of the combustion process in experiments connected with simulation tools.
- Fundamental research of exhaust aftrertreatment systems for gasoline and diesel engines in VKA's chemistry and catalyst laboratory and on the engine testbench
- Optimization of combustion processes with regard to alternative fuels, research on optimal synergy effects of fuels and new combustion processes
- Engine design for series production and implementation of innovative solutions for minimized frictional losses or to increase the variabilities such as variable valve trains or systems for variable compression ratios
- Examination and optimization of the acoustical engine and vehicle behaviour in experiments and by numerical tools
- Fundamental research and development on fuel cells and hybrid powertrain systems
- Powertrain systems for electric vehicles, especially with Range Extender
- Control systems for vehicle powertrains and vehicle calibration
